One-time lawman and pioneer land developer C.C. Duson is credited with founding Eunice, which was named for his second wife, Eunice Pharr Duson. He and his brother, W.W. Duson, had founded Crowley, Louisiana, in 1887, and now looked to the north of the parish for future development.
Duson bought 160 acres from Willie Humble and mapped out a townsite. Next, he persuaded the Southern Pacific
Railroad to extend a branch line from Crowley to his new town. Then he began what he and his brother had learned how to do as well as anyone: promote land sales. It was charted as a village in 1894, and incorporated as a town on June 4, 1895.

On average, there are 218 sunny days each year in Eunice. The July high temperature is around 94 degrees, with a January low of about 40 degrees. The comfort index, based on humidity during the hot months, is 21 out of 100. Eunice gets 59 inches of rain per year with no snow. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 96.
On Mardi Gras Day, which is always held the day before Ash Wednesday, Eunice holds a traditional Courir de Mardi Gras, which dates back from when the town was first established in the late 19th century. Also of much interest is the World Championship Crawfish Etouffee Cook-Off, where about 100 teams compete to see who can cook the best crawfish etouffee (smothered crawfish usually served with rice).

Other local celebrations include the Louisiana Prairie Cajun Capital Folklife Festival, the Cajun French Music Association Cajun Music Festival, Eunice Festival of Arts and LSUE Community Day, Louisiana Cajun Culture and Music Club Festival and our Fourth of July Celebration.

Eunice City Lake is a public recreation area on the shores of a man-made lake that is perfect for fishing, boating or just picnicking. Other lakes in the region include Foy Lake, Burtons Lake, Close Lake, Cowan Bay, Craft Lake, Dunns Lake, Grassy Lake, Half Moon Lake, Indian Lake, Keith Lake, Keller Lake, Mary Cane Lake, Second Lake, Side Lake, Swayze Lake and Wards Lake. Nearby beaches include Cypremort Point Beach and North Beach.
Area golf opportunities include the 9-hole Eunice Municipal Golf Course, the Cajun Pine Golf Club and the Ville Platte Golf and Country Club.
